Tweet of the week

I think this is a great question for GOP senators and representatives. Do they understand that?

But the more important question is: what are their priorities? Economic nationalism or a smaller administrative state? Which one will we see more of?

Eyes on you

February 24, 2017

I came across this via Atlas Obscura. Res ipsa loquitur.

“Trifot” is a kinetic sculpture by Czech installation artist David Černý, who is known for his whimsical, provocative works like the babies crawling up Žižkov Tower and a bus doing push ups. This sculpture, installed outside the Czech Photo Centre gallery, offers a decidedly dark perspective on surveillance and privacy.

The 40-foot-tall statue is modeled on vintage cameras with eyeballs in place of lenses. The bulging eyes swivel about independently, watching passersby, who might be shocked to find themselves broadcast onto one of six monitors in the area.

Learn from history or be doomed to repeat it

February 24, 2017

Recently I came across a clip by Dave Rubin (via Carpe Diem), which led me to watching other videos on his YouTube channel.

Here’s a very recent clip of Dave talking about something I’ve been wondering about myself: how the current political turmoil will resolve itself into something more like normal.

This clip is one of his monologues. He may be better known for his dialogues: one-on-one interviews and there are many of those.

I was thrilled to find somebody making a go at talking up the Classical Liberalism array of thought. I hope he continues doing that.

As for this clip, the call for people to study history and to develop their own ideas for the role of government is one I certainly agree with. The last presidential election left me with a very strong feeling that we may be headed for the days of Bread and Circuses.

But on second thought, I’m encouraged by recalling one of my favorite quotes from Margaret Thatcher:

Europe will never be like America. Europe is a product of history. America is a product of philosophy.

We’ve done it before.

Why speech must be free

February 19, 2017

Here’s Jordan Peterson speaking late last month* about why free speech is a necessity.

I think he made several very good points (a) about how people think by talking, (b) that suppressing that talk is never a good idea, and (c) about the limits of the U.S. Constitution, which is intended to limit bad players in government.

* From the YouTube notes:
On January 23, 2017, the Runnymede Society at Queen’s University law school hosted a mock debate between Jordan Peterson and Bruce Pardy (playing devil’s advocate) on the subject of Bill C-16, specifically on gender pronoun usage, and broadly on speech legislation. This video is an excerpt from the Q&A portion that followed.

The full video is available on both Runnymede Society’s channel and Jordan Peterson’s channel.

Asset forfeiture 101

February 13, 2017

Frankly, it’s a little disappointing that Trump wants to wind back the clock on asset forfeiture. It would be disappointing to hear this from anyone, of course, but it’s worse because Trump has a bully pulpit these days.

Several states have banned the practice in the last year or two and the Institute for Justice has been waging war on it for quite a few years now – with some success. Check out their Policing for Profit page.

In the meanwhile, the folks at Reason are keeping the banner high.

I’m not wishing misfortune on anyone, but maybe if one of Trump’s family members or close friends had been a victim of civil asset forfeiture then he might have a different view of what often comes down to highway robbery.

Sharing the Trump humor

February 5, 2017

Dan Mitchell posts some amusing videos at International Liberty today. Here’s one from the Netherlands.

OK… Since Be Social Education (whatever that is) got the Netherlands video taken down, here’s the clip from Switzerland. Later… The Netherlands clip is back. Did ‘Be Social’ decide to be sociable?

The idea seems to have gone viral. There are similar videos from Denmark, Germany, and many others.

Spam fail

February 4, 2017

Since I registered some new TLDs recently (without hiding my contact info), I’ve been getting e-mail and text spam from people eager to help me put them to work.

But I had to LOL when I got the message below. It’s like watching a sharp-shooting competition where the shooter can’t load the gun. Or watching a ballet where the danseuse can’t get her slippers on. Smoove is the very word.
